The Bend Park and Rec Department will begin work on the Colorado Ave Dam Safe Passage project on Oct. 1st. This project includes reconstruction of the pedestrian bridge over the river and the building of a safe passage channels for floaters and wildlife, and a white water play park for kayaks. McKay park will also get a makeover with new amenities including bathrooms. The project is expected to last one year during which time McKay park and the pedestrian bridge will be closed. A pedestrian route over the river will be up on the sidewalk along Colorado Ave.
Although this is a popular area in summer and being closed next year will be unfortunate, the end result should be well worth it. Not only will the dam be a lot safer to floaters, but it will eliminate the need to portage the dam. It will also create a new draw to the area for white water kayaks.
