Sunriver, Oregon is a planned residential and resort community located about 15 miles south of Bend. Even though Sunriver is an unincorporated and self-governed community, it is located in the Bend Metropolitan Statistical area and the Bend / La Pine School District. Being a resort community, there are only about 1,500 residents that live in Sunriver year round, but there are enough lodging units for 4,200 people. In addition to the homes that are in the planned resort community, there are some nearby homes that aren’t in Sunriver proper, but are in an area referred to as Three Rivers South which is serviced by Deschutes County. Many of the homes in Sunriver are vacation homes that the owners rent out when they are not using them. The biggest draw to the Sunriver area is the Sunriver Resort and it’s four golf courses located there. Two of these courses are open to the public, and two are private for guests staying at the resort. Golf Digest magazine named Sunriver Resort one of the Top 10 Destinations for Family Golf in it’s January 2016 issue.
There are a lot of outdoor recreation activities in Sunriver, Oregon. In addition to golf, the resort has tennis courts, swimming pools, water slides, and many jogging and biking paths. The resort is also located right next to the Deschutes River which provides great opportunities for fishing, floating, and non-motorized boating and kayaking. Mount Bachelor ski resort is nearby for skiing in the winter, and there are numerous lakes and mountain biking trails close by in the summer.
Sunriver is located at an altitude of 4,200 feet and is in an area surrounded by beautiful pine trees which gives it a deep in the woods feel in spite of being located along highway 97. Winters are cold and snowy and summers are usually hot and dry. Because of this summer is the main tourism season for Sunriver.
